What is MasterClass?
MasterClass is a subscription platform that provides educational classes in a wide variety of categories from experts in their respective fields.
Categories of classes include:
A few other masters who have classes offered on MasterClass include Natalie Portman, Christina Aguilera, Penn & Teller, James Patterson, Gordon Ramsay, Anna Wintour, Bob Iger, Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Marc Jacobs, and many others.
Classes typically contain about 20 lessons, give or take.
Each lesson has a specific focus an area that is being taught and can range from a few minutes up to 30 minutes or so.
Total length of a class can vary widely, from 1-2 hours up to 6 or so.
What I do appreciate is that even for classes that have a lot of content, lessons are still provided in manageable chunks of time.
You don’t have to sit down for an hour to watch a class.
As long as you have 15-20 minutes you can complete at least one lesson, many times 2-3.
How much is MasterClass?
MasterClass is $180 for an annual subscription for access to all classes.
That is the equivalent of $15, but it is billed annually (i.e. you cannot pay $15/mo, you have to pay $180 upfront).
You can also pay $90 for access to a single class. For me, I don’t think the value is worth it to pay for just one class.
There is a lot of content on the site and the price for an annual membership, in my opinion, worth it.
I do wish they had an option to pay $15/mo, even if it required a year-long contract, as I think it would be more digestible for many.
Alas, as of writing this post that is not an option.
Who is Bobbi Brown?
If you have ever shopped for makeup at Sephora or a department store, you have probably seen Bobbi Brown’s name.
Bobbi Brown is a professional makeup artist and founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, a billion-dollar company that she left in 2016.
Bobbi Brown started her brand after working as a makeup artist in New York City.
At the time, makeup was known to be bright and bold (it was the 80s, afterall). But Bobbi’s style was always very natural.
Bobbi Brown’s philosophy is that beauty is what makes you feel good. She believes authenticity is beautiful. Therefore, she has always tried to accentuate individuals’ features rather than change or alter them.
This philosophy of makeup is what initially attracted me to watching her MasterClass.
I have watched a lot of makeup content on YouTube. If you have ever done the same, you know that the trend right now is that more is more with makeup.
But that is not always appropriate for the workplace, in my opinion. And it is not always what will make someone feel their best.
In my experience, most professional women have a similar outlook on makeup as Bobbi. They want to feel good without “too much”. They want to look like the best version of themselves.
Bobbi Brown began her brand in 1991 with lipsticks, when natural makeup was a very bold concept. The makeup trends in the 80s were bold and bright colors (think, BLUE eyeshadow).
But Bobbi's style of makeup was a clear gap in the marketplace, as her brand grew like wildfire.
She sold the company to Estee Lauder in 1995, and eventually left altogether in 2016.
She continues to be an entrepreneur, found several businesses in the last few years.
Who is Bobbi Brown’s MasterClass for?
Anyone who wears makeup.
But really, I think the people that will benefit most from this MasterClass are professional women whose makeup skills are at a beginner to intermediate level.
If you want to take your makeup skills in the workplace up a notch, this is the perfect class.
Women who like to just wear a natural light look day-to-day will learn the perfect techniques to accomplish an effortless look.
There is also content geared towards professional makeup artists within the course, but the vast majority is aimed towards your average woman.

My Bobbi Brown MasterClass Review
Overall, I found Bobbi Brown's MasterClass to be excellent.
Bobbi was an great instructor and demonstrated techniques that could be easily picked up by any beginner in makeup.
I truly appreciate her approach to beauty and makeup, which contrasts heavily with today's Instagram and YouTube makeup trends.
Frankly, I find a lot of those trends to be intimidating to most women and not appealing in a professional environment.
Bobbi's philosophy is a breath of fresh air.
She shows you that you do not need a closet full of makeup. Just a few staple products that you know how to apply properly.
Breaking the Mold
Makeup trends today are really focused on heavy makeup with bold colors or advanced techniques.
Think Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.
What I love about Bobbi's story is that her approach to beauty flourished at a similar time, in the 80s when makeup was bright and loud.
Her success in such an era demonstrates that the average woman, then and now, is not trying to achieve what we see on social media and TV.
Modern, working women want an easy and effortless makeup look that accentuates natural features. That makes us feel more confident and ready to take on the world.
That is exactly what Bobbi sets out to do in this MasterClass.
For this reason, I find it very different from the makeup videos you will find on YouTube.
Although those are free, the content in this course is much more valuable.
A Message of Self Love
Throughout the class, Bobbi makes it a point to emphasize that all faces are beautiful. She finds ALL people beautiful.
Interesting faces are beautiful.
Your natural beauty is worth accentuating, rather than hiding.
I think this is such a great message for women, as we are constantly under pressure to look a certain way.
Especially in the age of social media.
This philosophy is something we should always remember.
Makeup Technique and an Approachable Routine
Bobbi Brown's MasterClass did a really great job in covering every technique that a modern working women would need to put together a great makeup look for day, work, night, or even a party.
The most useful information I found was, honestly, the basics.
This class did a really great job in covering foundation and color matching.
I also really enjoyed the lesson on blush and bronzer. There is so much conflicting information on how to properly apply these.
Bobbi provides very easy techniques that result in an effortless look.
This class does not provide tutorials on 100 different looks with a wide variety of eye and lip looks. Or a lot of different color combinations.
Frankly, that isn't Bobbi Brown's style. And I can appreciate that.
Instead, it really focuses on techniques that will allow you to create a go-to routine.
And it is true that the majority of working women don't wake up and think "what eye look am I going to do today?"
Instead, they need a quick, easy and reliable makeup routine that they don't have to think about every morning.
A routine that they could even do in the car.
That is what Bobbi achieves in this class.
Techniques for Bold Looks
The average woman considers looks such as a smoky eye or statement lip as out of reach.
Many times, it can be intimidating reaching for these darker colors.
Bobbi does a great job at breaking down how to accomplish these more intimidating looks.
I really appreciate her "don't overthink it" approach. As well as her attitude that it doesn't have to be perfect to look great.
Know What to Carry
I also really loved the lessons where Bobbi reviewed what you should carry in your everyday bag and travel bags.
Let's be real, most women over pack. I feel like I need to carry around everything I used in the morning JUST IN CASE.
But that is burdensome.
Bobbie really shows how you only need a few products for touch ups during the day. And only a few more if you are going to go from day to night.
These lessons really helped me slim down what I carry with me in my everyday bag.
Workbook
I found the workbook to be a great complement to the course. It contains a lot of useful information.
Many times, workbooks can be an afterthought. Created just to market as a "bonus" piece of information.
But I have found MasterClass' workbooks to contain a lot of value.
They are not just a regurgitation of the course material, but provide more in-depth information on what is covered in the lessons.
What is nice is that you can JUST watch the course and you will learn all the fundamentals.
But if you also take the time to go through the workbook, you'll be able to delve into a lot of details that Bobbi doesn't get into during the course.
It does also provide an overview on the basics in the lessons (not everything discussed) as a handy reference.
Makeup Products and Recommendations
I do appreciate that the class was not pushing or trying to sell any particular product.
Still, I wish that some of these recommendations were covered in the course rather than solely the workbook.
An extra lesson on that would have been helpful.
Also, I would have loved to hear Bobbi's thoughts on what products she thinks splurging on is worth it versus the ones that are not.
Unfortunately, the class didn't get into this detail.
Tips for Makeup Artists
Although the lessons for makeup artists were interesting, they probably aren't relevant to the vast majority of people that will take this course.
I did find the lesson on editorial makeup pretty fun. You could still pull some of those techniques into "going out" or party looks.
But I also wonder the true value for makeup artists to take this class, as most of this class is focused on providing beginner to intermediate level makeup tips.
So that disjointedness in the target audience of the class was slightly confusing.
But nevertheless, the makeup artist section was still fun to watch.

Pros

ConClusion
If you are a working woman who wants to feel more confident with her makeup application, this class is excellent.
All of Bobbi's techniques are very do-able by any beginner. It is also incredibly applicable to a professional environment.
Although $180 upfront is pricey, MasterClass' library as a whole is entirely worth it. There is just so much content for your personal and professional growth.
There is an abundance of information to learn in Bobbi Brown's MasterClass, including skills you may have always been curious about and didn't know how to get started in.
Some of my other favorite MasterClass classes are:
So if you are looking for a purchase that will support your personal growth and career development, MasterClass is a great investment.
And Bobbi's class is one of the best they offer.
